Special

I am sure you like me have often bought goods from eBay or Amazon, when you get strange plugs on them, maybe not for your country/region, or with strange adapters. That’s what happens when products are made and adapted afterwards to use in other ways, situations and places.

Software is much the same.

Great if you are very vanilla in needs and requirements. In that situation, you are likely to have few real gripes. If you are ‘special’, then you might just get quite frustrated with suppliers who refuse to recognise a lot of things they might regard as special, but are just bread and butter to you.

Why would it concern me?

Well anything that concerns my clients, interests and concerns me. Also, having been involved in working for an English software house involved in SocialHousing systems, I have some experience in this area. While different landlords, charities and RP’s in the same country have their quirks, leave England’s green and pleasant land and software has some more specialness to contend with.

Devolved administrations have now control of health, housing and legislation to a certain (or total) degree. This leads to mixed standards, returns and regulations. In Wales or Scotland, to see a system solution default to ‘English Decent Homes’, rather than WDH or the SHQS, is a crime worthy of a small fine. Increase that if you see all three coming up in the solution. Irritating if nothing else. Also, never have an option showing for ‘Right To Buy’ in the solution outside of England. The sensible devolved nations will smile when they remind you it was dropped a few years ago.

Travellers and historians (or maybe just having a passing historical knowledge) of the UK, will know that in Scotland, there is a whole separate and in many ways unique legal system. A job title I have occasionally struggled with over the years, is the ‘Procurator Fiscal’. I have yet to meet one in real life, although different titles and different laws, mean different terminology particularly used in communications. This is a very key difference and I have seen clients change whole systems or create (hated) elaborate workarounds, to get around the issue. Why suppliers are so lax with this I do not understand. In selling to Scotland, most suppliers have to agree and sign a contract conforming to Scottish Law, so you would expect the clue to be right there.

Leave the UK and the specialness gets worse.

Just across the sea from Holyhead or Fishguard and the specialness really starts. While the UK systems of Housing Benefit and Universal Credit work in a very similar way, Social Housing is funded in a particular way in Ireland. Under the differential rent scheme rent paid is directly related to household income and subsidy assists the original build. Worryingly I have seen much rent software exported to Ireland, that fails on this most key of requirements.

Second on the Irish irritation list is address formats. Try fitting a Kerry, Cork or Dublin address & postcode format into a standard UK address control. Its fun, but its rarely right!

Its amazing too how often a change to Country or Region, such as Ireland or Australia can make a big difference in standard functions or date formats. Even more amazing is that sometimes software is deployed to other countries for SocialHousing use and this type of functionality has not always been checked and tested, to operate coherently. Field labels and database column names often irritate too. In some places we have ‘Local Authorities’, in other regions ‘Councils’. Just one example that I have seen anger over in past projects. Suppliers just stating ‘Well that’s just the way it is’, never cuts it.

You would hope that in the new world of SaaS and cloud deployed solutions, most of these problems should start to be designed away. I would hope for that to be the case, but do not rely on it as the silver bullet. Take my advice, always ask where software originated or was designed. It will give you better clues, where to check for possible issues!

If you are a supplier, take some of these thoughts on board. Recognise your customer (& prospect) specialties. Ignore them at your peril !

Rise Up

If you do the Twitter thing, follow me at @HousingITguy
or LinkedIn here https://uk.linkedin.com/in/tonysmiththathousingitguy

Any watcher of the current social housing landscape of integrated solutions will have noted the growth and almost fetish (maybe we should all get out more?), around solutions delivered via browser, which has emerged of late. One particular supplier has driven the growth of this way of thinking, but overall in the last four years,

I have felt a mood shift in the sector, which has been long coming.

I have recently been working with a particular Social Housing client who has stipulated it’s ‘cloud or nothing’. I totally get it, I really do. A supplier that can reliably deliver cloud in a browser, quickly and to timescales, would be a novelty these days for integrated housing solutions, for sure. Harsh maybe, but that’s where we are at.

One sector supplier who has often been wrongly associated with big councils and (quite candidly for me to say), felt to have left their eye off the UK ball in previous years, has seriously surprised me of late. Some serious praise is deserved I think.

Key in transformation of Northgate Public Services (NPS) has been in the injection of £3.2m+ of capital and over 36,500 days of development already,  plus an extra £3.3m approved to come from its acquisition by NEC of Japan , much offshore (not that that is a bad thing, as it has visibly resulted in quality releases), and has visibly ‘got stuff done’. Who else is investing that many days into making its housing solutions better?

Few suppliers in the medium to large social housing supplier zone have over £6m to spend on improving product and I know from experience, that bringing a product with modern ‘work anywhere’ technology to market, is a massive challenge, most often under-estimated by a factor of three or more. NPS’ browser approach frees up teams to support their communities, where interactions originate, escaping from the shackles of their desk. Some suppliers currently anchored in old tech or databases, are possibly fooling themselves, and reasonably never going to invest to reinvigorate legacy products.

Embracing economic cloud delivery is something that NPS has realised as being a key driver going forward. Large clients such as Wolverhampton Homes are seeing this currently as a reliable, low risk, way forward. A quarter of the customer base has already embraced the new solutions.

The tech underneath the bonnet, ticks all my boxes, restful API’s delivered in an open manner. A lot of suppliers still levy too high a charge for integration kits, NPS has really sensibly taken an approach that clients taking a hybrid strategy is cool, if they choose not to use all their offering and its complete capabilities including CRM. Why should it not be? Using perhaps MS Dynamics 365 or an alternative ERP, linked underneath to NPS housing, is possibly the best of both worlds. In many situations, it’s a most sensible way to go.

Many of those new development days have gone towards a new asset management solution.with integral Component Accounting coming soon . This is the way the sector seems to be coalescing. Better Integration trumps specialisms that only benefit your asset team’s two persons and a dog. Apologies if that sounds brutal, but I think it’s true.

Another area in NPS Housing of note is its attitude to document management. This to me is the missing link to so many systems and solutions, particularly with regard to GDPR. Clearly NPS provide their industry strength Information@work solution, providing superior links with document consumption and generation. Security and performance is no after thought, it’s clearly built in from inception, and so great to see.

Exposing those documents within staff mobile solutions is a big driver for efficiency.  The NPS Housing mobile solution for assets launches in September 2019, the start of new options for users.

Follow the sakura, the brighter thinking in housing...
I chatted to contacts on the busy NPS stand at CIH in Manchester, back in June and could see that beyond all of the above, IOT and predictive analytics, was being incorporated into the latest solutions. Users were clearly at the centre of these developments, which I find really positive. In the realm of other HMS offerings, I see little that approaches the predictive analytics capabilities of the well known leader for arrears. NPS have the advantage that the Oracle tech stack already comes with advanced data/analytics capability. This is starting to fundamentally alter how housing providers operate in a leaner fashion, targeting resource where necessary, predicting where it’s needed, in a more data-led fashion.

Checkout the video from Northgate at CIH Manchester here.

Based on the current take up of Internet Of Things, I think NPS look to have one of the best chances of pushing this forward, for the sector.

Keep an eye on NPS. They look to me as perhaps the next surprise in UK Social Housing. Get them in your procurement, see if you are surprised too! It really is “住宅の明るい思考” or as you or I might say, “Brighter Thinking For Housing”.

Make It Real

If you do the Twitter thing, follow me at @HousingITguy
or LinkedIn here https://uk.linkedin.com/in/tonysmiththathousingitguy

Rappers & musicians often spend time trying to keep it real. We all should, because before long we will be found out. When that happens, nobody feels good.

In terms of keeping it real, I am very keen in procurements we always see that too. What is sold, should be what is experienced. Why would we want anything else? Of course, consultants who just do procurements, would not see that at the sharp end of getting these things in & working.

I had a conversation recently with a good mate of mine, who has just bought a new BMW. His beef was that pretty much everyone wants metallic paint and it will always be a £650+ bolt on to the eventual cost. Spookily enough as will be ‘head up’ displays and lots of other bolt-ons.

I said, “You are lucky Mike, if you were procuring software, and that was a car, I regularly get offered models at great prices, but with only 3 wheels. We all know we need at least 4 wheels to have anything drivable, but that will be some additional hidden cost, further down the line. Just a spot of change control, we will all have to swallow. Of course, at the sale, the commercial chaps will argue until they are blue in the face, that you will be quite sound on just three wheels.

Of course we remember only one three wheeler, that one from ‘Only Fools & Horses’. Are our Social Housing suppliers touting the 21st century implementation equivalent of the Reliant Robin, in some cases?

It kind of feels like that to me when any supplier suggests that two test data conversions and a go-live one is all you will ever need, and by inference, that only has been costed in. Don’t get me wrong, but my six years plus, implementing various sites and working on that practical side recently, as well as procuring solutions, has taught me otherwise. Maybe these sales people are uninformed, deluded, mistaken or just dishonest?

Clearly, many suppliers work very differently in that respect, particularly where its necessary to keep customers, that need to go from their own legacy system to their new one. At my old shop, many years ago, it was possible to migrate a whole system in just ten days. We did it once, for over 30,000 units. If a well planned process had been engineered well enough, it would be fast, accurate and efficient. Also, honed & improved at each customer migration. No end of lessons that can be learned to speed up the process and make it smoother, better. That was my philosophy anyway.

Clearly, not improving data migration processes, in the interests of the customers, leads to dissatisfaction that soon gets around. Rather than regarding the act of staying with your existing supplier, maybe upgrading to a newer, shinier jalopy, as low risk, its actually a driver to look at whatever else might be available. If you are up for it, go where the grass is greener, rather than suffer apathy or complacency with the supplier you know.

Of course there is more wrong with the differences between sale & implementation than that, more on that blogged about here.

If you are considering self-service, see you in October, at a new special conference
