As everyone has no-doubt noticed we are in the midst of an EU referendum vote. Clearly both sides think we are going to hell in a hand cart and we need to toss a coin, before our visit to a polling booth on the 23rd June. This is a decision chucked to us that I think is important enough for elected politicians to use their brains to make for us. we know what happened with Boaty McBoatface now don't we?

David Mitchel (yes him, talking some sense in this context), seemed to have a pretty accurate take on it for me http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/may/29/eu-referendum-parliament-leaders-david-cameron-david-mitchell?CMP=fb_gu

We see so much coverage on the TV, but how is social media dealing with this? Strangely how Twitter and other channels do, it seems to attract more of the same opinion. You do read your own opinions back from followers, that do tend to think like you. Is it financial security, stability in a shrinking world, in a large trading block (RemainIn) or sovereignty/controlling immigration (Brexit) that matters to you?

Has the EU moderated some of our governments here over the years, or prevented them doing what was fair? Did they introduce rights, freedoms, safeguards, or would we have done that anyway?

The hashtags are out, check out the bile from both sides, before deciding:
Also the stats are about, for instance have you checked out https://yougov.co.uk/yougov-8545/ to checkout how EuroSceptic you should be, by region.

According to Sysomos MAP, referendum tweets have been (unsurprisingly) heating up, this map shows the main strands involved.

The blue cluster represents the implosion of the Tory party presumably, whatever happens after the result.

Readers of this blog are too bright to be told what to think, I know you will bother your arse to get out and vote the way you feel will build a better future, for us all.

However you vote on 23rd of June 2016, bear in mind it will be your fault. I cannot imagine our politicians to say anything else than 'It was the will of the British people', whatever doom awaits us....

Mondo Bondage

S&M I am told can be an interesting pass-time, if it's something that all consenting adult parties enjoy. I am reliably told that a 'safe word' is essential, for when the pain really, really needs to stop. A handy way to remember the two meanings of the S & the M, is to think of the abuse coming from Me or Someone else.

#UKhousing has been having a dose of its own abuse recently. A few lashes in the chancellors emergency budget, 1% reduction in rents and some tongue lashing in the Times, to degrade & soften up the 'ill-performing sector' for the humiliation of more RTB2.0 (Right To Buy). We are getting used to watching the bottom line, how to build our budget reviews and line our loyal staff up for voluntary or maybe mandatory redundancy. Dark heavy clouds have descended over some of the most optimistic and forward thinking managers & directors.

After a softening up to threaten nationalisation or reclassification , the housing sector was asked to swallow its pride last week, by its national body, The NHF. I think they shouted something like, "Hey turkeys, can we all vote for Christmas?" or similar.

To me it's got a familiar ring to it, from a government with recent form in this area. It was only a few weekends ago, that someone persuaded the BBC, "Hey turkey, can you stump up £650m for free TV licences?"

Now if the latter one had gone through parliament, like maybe it should have, a clause or two, or the House of Lords may have moderated it. Possibly a means test could have restricted it to all retired people with an annual pension of £10,000 or less. That might have saved the BBC maybe £100m, probably funding four more, internationally acclaimed costume dramas, or 52 weekends of Michael McIntyre annually. Maybe it was lucky they did it to themselves.

We now have a Tory administration who offered extended RTB as a manifesto giveaway promise, expecting not to have to do it in coalition.  Having won the election outright, now it's a promise to be delivered. With a resurgent Labour left and actually a slim majority, it might only take 11 Tory rebels, to stop or seriously soften a bill for more RTB giveaways. We could expect the House of Lords to give it a good seeing too as well. Many MPs can see the danger of losing more of our social housing. London pretty much unaffordable to rent in, increasing costs of housing homeless, migrants funnelling in from Syria and other asylum seekers.

If parliament passing a bill for extended RTB sounds like sadism imposed on the social housing sector, the NHF are effectively saying, be masochists and vote now like turkeys for this. Make it easy as it would be a difficult ride through parliament. Once the sector had voted for it, surely it would be spun like, "The sector knew it was failing and that selling off lots of its much needed low rent homes, to boost the PRS still further, was the best commercial thing to do".  Pushing up rents is good commercially for the UK and shifts the voting demographic to the political right.

Anyone with experience in the sector knows that previous RTB has never come near to even 10% replacement and that over 40% of homes sold, end up in the PRS anyway. I lived in one for a year, paying four times more than a social rent, in a flat in worse repair than the (still) social rent ones adjacent. How any board can suggest we flagellate and subject our organisations to the pain of more RTB, knowing the wider consequences to society, cost of the future HB bill, failure of replacement etc baffles me.

We need to take our chances with a proper bill (primary legislation in October), through parliament, surely that's the only sensible course of action?

Let something as fundamental as this be discussed in detail, deconstructed and given proper scrutiny. We need to get the message out too. What we do for society, to our staff, their family, friends, MPs, House of lords members, local & national newspapers, other traditional & social media.

The London Evening Standard has already picked up on the effects of more RTB. Read Anthony Hilton's Article here.

It's time we stopped beating ourselves up and refused the offer, from a body that I would hope, should always act in the best interests of social housing, to take on more masochistic pain, administered by our own hand.  Already a number of voices have spoken up and a number of RSL's led by Red Kite Housing are using the 'safe word', which on this occasion is 'No'.

Elected

If you do the Twitter thing, follow me at @hotpixUK
or LinkedIn here uk.linkedin.com/pub/tony-smith-bsc-hons-acih/a/979/351/

It's hard to miss, but there's hundreds of professional politicians, out there across the UK, all looking for our vote, to help them secure a five year gig down in Westminster. If you work in social housing you can't have missed the feeling that some politicians, in their manifestos seem to want to see the back of us for some reason. Also the back of truly affordable (with a lower case 'a') housing. You know the type, for the poor, 'key workers' (remember that initiative from half a decade back?), nurses, students, barmaids, social workers etc.

If you do Twitter, or spotted the ads in our cities, on the vans of housing repair teams etc, you might also have come across #HomesForBritain, one of the biggest awareness campaigns for the sector in my memory. The key idea is to have politicians and the public wake up to the ticking time-bomb in our midst. The UK fetish of home ownership and wrong headed move to make social housing more Affordable (with a capital A), has the effect of pricing more folk out of affording rented accommodation, reducing new build (as less is funded) and drives the Housing Benefit bill still higher.

The slogan of #HomesForBritain, "eliminate the housing crisis in a generation" is not actually that ambitious. Some like 'Generation Rent' don't think this is ambitious enough, and I can see where they are coming from. See http://www.generationrent.org/fixhomesforbritain I can sympathise as I don't think we can wait a generation. My kids can't for one.

Politicians don't have a clue about housing, or the effects of initiatives like the bedroom tax / spare room subsidy (sic), accelerated RTB (Right To Buy) without replacing sold homes. In short, they don't actually feel anyone's pain and why would they? Most have two homes, paid for by us, with expenses for (multiple) kitchens, sandalwood bog seats and banana guards etc. For the rewards it brings I am sure it's a charmed existence. Personally, I would house all 650 MPs in tower blocks in Hackney or some other handy location, just 30 minutes travel time from Westminster, on the Overground. Don't you think they might understand the housing issues then after 5 years of that? They might understand the concept of #WrongToBuy

In my experience a lot of staff who work in housing (and I work with a vast array of extremely inspirational people, I would not work in any other sector it's so rewarding - really!). They struggle with understanding what we do in social housing and why it's so important to our society. We need to educate each other at work, our friends outside it and certainly the pollsters knocking on our doors looking for votes.

We don't bang on enough to spread the word about our successes. We let the press exaggerate the sector through the prism of Benefits Street and six bed houses with huge families supported by the state, keeping a shire horse in their back garden. Clearly, all our HA's have not got many of those, if any at all. well none of the twenty odd I work with anyway.

The recent manifesto (I will leave you to go out and Google which one...) that promoted more Right To Buy with a hefty discount, highlighted how little politicians (of any party) understands of social housing or 'Council Housing' (both of which appear to be understood as interchangeable, but clearly they are not). What could go wrong? In fact, I am surprised, some political party is not advocating something similar for defence.

IE We are short of weapons. Why don't we sell off all the weapons we have at present, cheap and replace them with far less weapons with the proceeds? For some reason no politicians have come up with that one. Well Dave, Ed, Nick, Nic, Nat, Gerry, Nige and that super Welsh lass with the very B52's Rock Lobster beehive, you can have that idea from me for free. Clearly that is the proposition for housing. A confidence trick. The same one that dropped around 50% of the RTB sales in the last 30 years into the laps of PRS (Private Rented Sector) landlords. I lived in one myself for a year, paying three times the social rent that a different type of renter might have paid, who really needed it.

The message we absolutely need to get out to the UK is that there is a housing supply and affordable (small 'a'), homes shortage, for rent and to buy. Over the last 30 years we have not built a million or more homes, that we really, really needed. We need to start fixing it straight away. That will kick start the economy, provide places for all to live, rent or buy using various tenures, including shared ownership of many imaginative variants. In fact its actually #WrongToBuy

Politicians need to be part of the answer. They are clearly currently most of the problem. Rise up housing people, tell the world, let them know the truth. No one else will do the job for us and if we fail, we only have ourselves to blame.  Take up the fight and lets help change it from here on. Engage and agitate before it's too late. Oh and use your vote wisely, it could be your communities and job on the line here if we cannot turn this around 8-(
