Recently I have had quite a few chats with clients and suppliers about the march to The Cloud. Covid19 and lockdown have had a big influence on changing attitudes, although I think I really saw a corner turned, in mid 2018. 

Council and Local Authority clients were always reluctant to consider the cloud. Turkeys didn’t used to vote for Christmas as a rule, nor did quite well paid council infrastructure teams. From 2018 onwards, within ten minutes of talking about procurement, I heard more and more, “Whatever we buy, must all be in the Cloud and off-prem”.

Solutions have been available in the Cloud for a decade, although recently we have more robust security protocols, offerings, Cyber Essentials and procurement safeguards, which all reassure.

Cyber security has become a new growth industry, almost from a standing start and something no site can really avoid taking seriously. Its not cheap and quite rightly has become big business. A client pointed me to an interesting article last week on cybersecurity company Darktrace, just about to float on the stock market for £3billion price tag.

Darktrace launched in Cambridge 8 years ago by an unlikely alliance of mathematicians, former spies from GCHQ and the US and artificial intelligence (AI) experts. Poppy Gustafsson (she,her) was 30 years old when she co-founded Darktrace back in 2013. 

She should be worth £20m after flotation, which is a nice wedge indeed. Readers of this blog will be aware of my thoughts on IT and gender mix. It is a very male geek dominated sector on the whole and Poppy has also become something of a gender diversity champion, in the bloke-dominated tech world.

The ICT industry average is about 15% female, Darktrace to their credit manage more like 40%. What’s the gender mix in your ICT or implementation/development team? Is it improving, or perhaps as David Byrne would say, ”Same As It Ever Was” ? In my own sons computer science college group, out of twenty students, only four are other than male.

Why are we so poor at encouraging females in the ICT foundation subjects of science, tech, engineering and maths? Amber Rudd wrote an interesting article on this, for the Times back in February, worth checking out 

As previously, I would say from what I generally see, that we are still not getting the best of mixed gender techie teams, on our helpdesks, IT Teams, development or implementation. There is a lot to do.

Human Firewall

As would be expected, everyone I work with is on message & policy with all the tech firewalls and cyber security. Some even taking out some Cyber-security insurance. Priced at about £600 or so, I don’t think that is going to be adequate when GDPR hits the streets later in 2018, do you?

Anyway that aside, a Ted talk video I watched, from the excellent Rob May ( @RobMay70 ) did wake me up to the whole sheer gullibility of people, where user names, passwords & other key info is concerned. Would you trade those secret things for a 60 pence Mars bar? The point is that however you secure systems with port access, secure FTP etc, will not mitigate the ‘Idiot Factor’

Forgive me for being so flippant, but increasingly the weakest link in the chain is not tech, but flesh & blood people. These are the human firewall and they need to perform as well as all those cyber initiatives. In fact, they can easily drive a coach and horses (Peveril of The Peak, would be my favoured stagecoach, from Luton to Manchester actually…), through your security policies.

Rob in his Ted talk mentions ‘Phishing attacks’, which we are very familiar with. These days the most effective attacks are ‘Whaling attacks’. These net tens of thousands, not hundreds of pounds. How can that happen? How stupid can people be, you are asking, aren’t you dear reader?

Well consider this. One up from that Nigerian prince who needs your help to transport £9m of gold out of Zimbabwe, an email request from your manager to authorise a payment of £55.4k to supplier x. Now, staff obey and respect their managers don’t they, in most orderly organisations? Clearly in this situation, we would hope that rather than clear obedience to managers, some questions might be asked here.

Consider in your organisation, would questions be asked, or would strict obedience be expected? You can surely see some dilemma here. Have we empowered our staff to think for themselves? Have we equipped them to question? What cost a short phone call, or a walk to that managers office to ask, “Are you sure, and was this from you”?

Fall short in this area, and your cyber firewall, will be undermined by failure of your human firewall. Act now and secure that aspect as well as ports TCP 1723 & the rest you have strapped down, your staff, at all levels are informed and proactive too…

A few weeks ago, I got into a conversation at a client I have been working with, around their newly launched self-service portal.

Without naming the RSL in the Midlands, I thought they had made a very good job of it, working with a third party web partner and their HMS provider. Lately I am coming around to the idea that the best self-serve seems to generally involve that kind of mix. Maybe that’s one for another expanded blogpost.

However, I digress.

The client had been pursuing a soft launch, with several hundred customers contacted in the first phase, by email and post. Each customer had been invited to contact the RSL, with the assigned user/reference ID in the communication, to ‘confirm’ their identity.

Getting on for a hundred had been back in contact, but one had caught the organisations eye. One customer had replied to the email, with just about every possible piece of personal data, clearly ‘over’ confirming their identity. There was enough personal data, to probably execute some clear identity theft, a few times over, for what was supplied.

Firstly, the question was, “What’s to be done”?

The respondent had taken the original email quite literally, but perhaps not in the way that most of us, savvy internet users, might respond. Clearly the original communication should have stated that ‘There is no need to supply personal data by email, please phone us on xxxxxxx, so we can supply your password etc…’. Also, as banks often do, a statement about ‘not disclosing certain personal details’, should also be a feature.

Secondly, how should this particular resident be handled?

A peek at the RSL’s Housing Management System, might reveal if this is perhaps an older (perhaps naive) resident, or perhaps one with known vulnerabilities. Clearly, a member of housing or scheme staff, needs to have a conversation with this resident to explain how we need to keep secure on-line and also what is the appropriate way to respond and validate requests for personal data.

Getting tenants, residents and other customers signed up for self-service is a challenge for all in socialhousing. Much like those clever Aussies back in 2015, maybe RSLs can offer cyber security sessions, which becomes the Trojan Horse, followed by a smooth sign up of their resident portal? An interesting thought eh?

Interestingly, this RSL was already collaborating with a local college, to enable sessions at different schemes, with residents to help them get online safely and then move to doing business with their landlord online too.

Consider if this may work for your organisation. This may restrain some of your residents ‘Giving Everything’ to the bad guys out there, in cyberspace.

No doubt you will have heard that report by a BBC reporter that his (non-identical) twin managed to blag his voice operated access to his bank account. Last week. It certainly raised concerns that Rory Bremner might be hacking Theresa ‘strong & stable’ May, Jezza Corbin, Nic Sturgeon and little Timmy Farron’s bank accounts, based on some dates of births, available via Wikipedia and some great voice impressions.

Now, I can see the benefits of voice recognition, although we are at the early stages of this technology. We have all tried ordering cinema tickets and stated ‘Stockport’ and had repeated back ‘I am sorry do you mean Stevenage’? Having your voice as your 'Password' is of course, one that cannot like a conventional one, be easily changed.

Also, even if using English, is that the queens, or regional English? Anyone who knows me, I am proudly Mancunian. Why-Aye man, maybe as problematic an accent as other regional ones

So, how secure is saying ‘My Voice Is My Password’ ?

Well, the voice identification system is designed to monitor more than 100 unique identifiers in a person’s voice. These include the cadence, accent and pronunciation, as well as sounds that indicate the shape and size of the larynx, nasal passages and vocal tract. The clever bit is that because so many aspects make up that audible signature, it should be really difficult to crack.

The recent BBC investigation is in fairness undertaken in circumstances that a regular cyber criminal would not be working under.

Voice recognition and software currently out there, can deal with simple transactions within a specific context, passing the so called ‘Turing Test’

Context is key, as illustrated by a Red Dwarf episode way ahead of its time, involving foolishly repairing a ‘Talky Toaster’.  (I toast therefore I am)

Believe you me, we will be seeing much, much more of voice recognition. Anyone with Amazon Echo will be shouting commands already addressed to Alexa, to turn down the heating or play ‘Rage against the machine’.

What is more natural, keyboards (something invented only in 1890), or the human voice to instruct our technology? Clearly voice. So, this will get better and better and will be how ‘Headless Devices’ will no-doubt evolve, taking over our homes and cars.
