Now like me, you must have read or seen those news reports of that Trident missile going off course the other week. I guess in the big scheme of things, if ‘The Donald’ hits that big red button, just a few off target, wont amount to much. We will all be nuked & fried anyway. Apologies to be a little dark there!

Any idea what systems all that Trident stuff is based on?

I am sure that you might think that I was winding you up, if I said it all ran on ‘Windows for Submarines’. At this point you are thinking I have had an evening on the Belgian Triples. Well you would be wrong, you can thank BAE Systems and the Royal Navy, for that snappy title. The official name is ‘Submarine Command System Next Generation (SMCS NG)’, but pretty much how I have described it. It apparently took just 18 days to knock it up apparently. I have not got the price tag of course.

If I had £50 for all my friends, clients and work colleagues that rave about Macs, Linux and even Ubuntu, I could retire by now.

Would Microsoft be your goto software supplier, if you were manufacturing something like this? Nuclear weapons are a bit of a critical thing aren’t they? Back in the day I have worked in a mixture of development teams and also with external ones. I have always asked myself, if these guys were providing software for airlines, would I feel confident, flying on that stuff?

Having seen the bleu screen of death a few times, I wonder what that would mean for the planet, if we had one at a crucial time. Maybe we should be keeping Microsoft for Home & Office.

Into The Future

Who would not like to be future-proofed? Well not many people, although getting there (or near to it at any rate), can be no easy matter. Does anyone know what the future looks like, or where would you search for some of the solutions that we might be needing to be successful organisations, in 1, 3, 5 or 10 years time? In one respect, we are in a better position than ever before, we have Google and errm.. Bing. More info than ever on products and applications at our fingertips.

So far, so good. However it can very much be just like a giant digital shop window. Click on that 'request more details' link and you will most likely have subscribed to something you will soon have to unsubscribe to shortly and sales folk will be beating a path to your door. Maybe 'keeping you warm' every four weeks, just on the off-chance you may consider buying something else.

Sales people vary of course and in many situations we would just like to have a look at some new solutions, with perhaps no strings attached.

Also, one really useful aspect to discovery, is hearing how others have done it. Selected, implemented, sold it to staff and increased efficiency, customer service or made savings. In actual fact, I have found that the most useful of all. Too many times suppliers claim something and when its followed up with their clients/users, the story is very different.

One essential tool for getting closer to 'The Horses Mouth', is exhibitions and conferences. Now some supplier & other conferences have noticeably disappeared or slipped from view this last year. One of the best for looking to new and emerging future systems, is the March Housing Technology conference and executive forum - http://www.housing-technology.com/events/ht17/register/ 

I booked both days in Oxford, back before Christmas and at the time of blogging here, there is just 40 days to book in yourself.

At the moment, its out ahead for providing opportunities to chat to others in the social housing sector, with each day split into ten or more strands. Each tend to offer some new ideas, experiences and the chance to look over some of the solutions on offer. Excellent value even if it's just for a single day. Most speakers are able to chat after sessions and are pleased if they are staying later, to go into a lot more detail in breaks or at mealtimes. Personally, I have helped a number of people over my breakfast egg & mushrooms, just to put people on the right track.

We are in the January transfer window I guess.

As well as Chelsea's Oscar, going for a Chinese takeaway and Man City welcoming Jesus (hoping for some sort of resurrection in form, late season), SocialHousing ICT suppliers have been at it too. Have you noticed?

Yesterday (16th Jan 2017) it was quietly announced by Castleton PLC, suppliers of Documotive, Kypera, Impact and managed services via the old Montal, there was to be the departure of Davinder Sanghera.

Dav is well known as ex-Bromford, years at IBS and Documotive, and looks to be stepping back after the appointment of Dean Dickinson as CEO in October last year.

Most clients I work with, have at least one Castleton application or service in use, whether that’s Brixx, Documotive, or Kypera. Many with several applications, are clearly looking to see enhanced integration and unifying of a lot of the product set. It will be interesting to see how this has evolved at the forthcoming Housing Technology Conference & Exhibition, early in March. I am booked in and it would be great to hear experiences over a coffee or fizzy water.

Elsewhere, two players from Northgate and Capita effectively swapped no 9 shirts, in the guise of Anthony Singleton and Roger Birkinshaw. It will be interesting how that influence changes in sales approach, customer service and delivery, at those organisations.

Trouble-at-t-mill too up north, as another couple of HMS players seem to be losing staff like pound coins down a sofa, and a Software Development Manager, respectively.

Maybe 2017 will be a year when some of these changes will be seen to improve service to customers and the users of these large systems.

It would be no bad thing if suppliers led with forward thinking, rich, stable products, implemented by knowledgeable skilled implementers, keeping to the original promises & prices declared by honest sales staff. Maybe we would feel slightly better at paying up to a £grand a day for it then.

Something I was thinking of, and also validated by John Popham (https://twitter.com/johnpopham )  this week, was the dominance of 'The Donald' on Twitter. Love or loath the cove, he will be sworn in as POTUS shortly, following a long line of characters from George Washington in 1789.

It's obvious that he is looking to negotiate that position using social media. Wow, social media has attained that importance. Dealing with Russia and China that way.

What is your organisation doing to leverage social media? Just ask yourself. Has social media come of age?

Are your management team on twitter and Linkedin? Is it 24 hour?

Are your repairs and housing officer team on twitter and Facebook? Do your residents know when your staff are on the scheme? Is it a problem that you share that? If you are trying your best, that need not be any issue, particularly if residents can share their issues.

Try to look at social media differently as this is the way to connect with many of your residents . I have got to say that everyone I work with in social housing gives me the impression, that they want to make the world a better place. I do too. If someone puts on my gravestone that I worked to make this world a little better for housing, that would make me very happy.

Applying more transparency via social media is a good thing. It connects us with our communities and helps us solve problems. We are in a sector up for the challenge, c'mon let's do it!

Alexa, Murderess or accomplice?

Well that's the festive season over again for another 51 weeks. What did Santa have in his sack for you this year? Maybe Amazon Echo and the seductive Alexa? If so, are you controlling your heating, sampling how to tackle a guacamole from scratch (a good idea IMHO), or where to buy some new ultra-bright 760 Lumen cycle lights? Or have you not switched it on at all?

My friend Mike, who I have some great cycle rides, & a few tasty ales with, has had Echo for a while. A useful gadget and Mike loves his gadgets, one of the contrasts between us, but why I always enjoy getting out with him. Alexa has been picking his Apple playlists & all kinds of stuff, his daughter loves her too and got started with her straight away. Call her name and she's there. Cool.

In fact, don't bother calling her name and she is in fact keeping her ear to your ground. She's in your home like some IOT bunnyboiler, or she is your obedient friend. One thing she surely is doing, is obediently recording your conversations and potentially these can be turned into product recommendations or future valuable advert targeting. Alexa hearing a baby cry, will that expose you to Amazon suggestions for bumper packs of pampers or that special offer on a bumper tub of E45? Now it's not so far fetched is it, like inviting the most persuasive and silver tongued marketing 'pro', into your own personal castle.  

What happens when Alexa witnesses a crime? Now I don't mean those pink cycling shorts ('oh my god - call the fashion police!!'), what about a real crime? In case you missed it, at the tail end of last year, Alexa was subject to a search warrant in Bentonville, Arkansas and helped add fuel to the fire, in a 'Hot Tub Drowning' murder case. Oh why oh why in the UK do we have such dreary murders? Read some of the chapter & verse here.

So frivolous this seems on the surface, it does pose some serious questions about IOT and how we use it. Particularly, where we are using it in positive ways with SocialHousing residents and others involved in care/support contracts. Can we guarantee usage of our information, how its interpreted and used today and in the future. While the past worry might have been Kyrgyzstan teenagers hacking our internet connected yuppie kettles and food mixers, the real danger might be the other trojans we welcome into our home, helping us with our lives. 

We need to question more pointedly, where our information, voices, interactions are recorded, transmitted, stored, and utilised, whether we are thinking personally, or for our residents & customers.

Common Housing Register People

Smuggled out just prior to the Christmas 2016 break, you may have missed the news that popular Common Housing Register software supplier, Abritas have now been acquired by Civica.I had heard a whisper earlier in the autumn and thought this an interesting one.

In the deal, Civica pick up the web based housing needs, options & letting application, including an online mutual exchange tool to help tenants swap homes (www.swapandmove.co.uk). This follows on from other merger & acquisitions related to UKHousing, such as Keystone Asset Management, a few years ago and Coldharbour for community care.

This acquisition is billed naturally from Simon Reynolds of Abritas as "...the next stage in the development of our business and is a very positive step for employees, customers and partners".

Past experiences of other products being merged into a group, have resulted in a (sometimes shoddy) re-badge of software, merging of help/support desks, loss of experienced staff, loss of focus, increased prices and generally some deterioration of service to customers and end-users.Perhaps Civica may consider moving some of those incoming web developers, over to the Cx implementations. Particularly one organisation I am working with, would benefit greatly from that.

It will be interesting to see how this evolves, with the many clients I work with, using Abritas solutions and moving over to the Cx Housing system. I do tend to hear a degree of moaning, although I am unsure if that is a result of bad initial specification of CHR requirements when procuring or any particular service issues. Common Housing Registers can be contentious and I often see them hosted on particular HMS letting platforms, such as Northgate, Orchard and others. Other CHR platforms are available. Keeping all CHR partners happy however, is no mean feat.  

It will have netted Civica a number of new customers, as around 170 organisations are currently thought to utilise CHR's across the UK.

At least once a month, maybe more, I do a trip to Motherwell, into the Arneil Johnston office. The space is shared with Clyde Valley HA, in some pretty modern offices. I like them a lot and occasionally chat or see CVHA staff, while I am in there. It is one of the most tidy office spaces, I have ever seen.

There's good reason for that, and its lack of paper documents, flying around the place. A decent implementation of a mainstream EDRMS designed for UKhousing and a project to back-scan and destroy tenancy files and other baggage, has helped them arrive at this nirvana, without paper. It took about a million documents to be scanned to get them there, and it saved a shed load of space. I once heard that this was turned into a mini-gym, although I have yet to give the cycle trainers a go.

With the varied organisations I work with, I sometimes get in discussions around EDRM and document management. No doubt about it and I have blogged about the essentiality of good EDRM these days, but there are still many sites holding on to their paper files. Many people, managers and users included, believe that even after being scanned, original paper needs to be retained.

Now, as we know from cave drawings, to hieroglyphics, to paper, to 8", 5.25", 3.5" floppies, CD's, DVD's, Iomega ZipDisks (anyone remember those?) and now cloud storage, media is always moving on. Paper seems to have a particular lofty official aura, a bit like the "get up and glow" Ready-Brek kids - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6c3n-mh5bck.

Paper seems sacrosanct, like head stones in fact. Jeez, make sure on my death I get a decent headstone, hopefully saying this Mancunian made the world slightly better than he found it, or something profound like that. Just don't put my Twitter account 'in-memoriam'.

Is this true or not? Well, while its obviously an organisation choice, but what does 'The (Westminster) Man' say? What do the BSI (British Standards Institution) they say about destroying original documentation, once scanned?

Spookily enough, with BIP0008 / BIP0009 (previously PD0009), computer says YES! That is as long as you follow the correct process, in committing your records to digital image. The key hurdles are Authenticity, Storage & Access Procedures and Demonstrability of adherence. Crack these and you two can have an office as aesthetically pleasing as Clyde Valley. One key aspect of if a document can be destroyed, is down to who actually owns it. Deeds for example might not actually be owned by the RSL/RP.

As to if some of these scanned documents are admissible in court, rules hinge on (among others), There should be a proper system for:
    (i) identifying each file or document destroyed;
    (ii) recording that the complete file or document, as the case may be, has been photographed/recorded;
    (iii) recording identification by the camera operator/user of the negatives/electronic files as copies of the documents photographed; and
    (iv) preserving and indexing the negatives/digital files.

Of course, digital files then need to be protected, to the same reliable extent as physical files. Digital copies can be recorded relatively easily in various physical and cloud locations, which is something that is not easily done with paper files. Just be sure that before scanning, your supplier can conform to these standards. Get your contract/SLA in place and do the necessary quality control.
