Pioneer To The Falls

If you do the X / Bluesky thing, follow me at @HousingITguy or LinkedIn here https://uk.linkedin.com/in/tonysmiththathousingitguy

Only the other week I was reminded there is a useful little trick when watching a housing software demonstration, particularly from those bigger suppliers out there hoovering up applications like there is no tomorrow.

While everyone else is admiring the shiny dashboards, brightly coloured tiles and suspiciously flawless customer journey, have a quick glance at the browser’s URL bar. It can tell you rather more than the suppliers death by PowerPoint does.

What is being presented as one seamless, fully integrated supplier platform may actually be several separately acquired products, still running on different domains, different technology stacks and, occasionally, entirely different login arrangements. The supplier may have applied the same colour palette, added its logo in the top corner and carefully rehearsed the demonstration so nobody notices the joins, that's the smoke & mirrors.

It is the software equivalent of badge engineering. New grille, fresh paintwork and a familiar badge on the bonnet, but quite a lot underneath has come from somewhere else entirely. Like the 1980s Triumph Acclaim, that was really just a (very reliable) Honda Ballade underneath. Probably one of the best cars British Leyland never built actually!

There is nothing inherently wrong with acquired products. Buying a decent application can add useful functionality to a wider product suite much faster than attempting to build the whole thing from scratch. The problem starts when the demonstration implies a level of integration, maturity and live customer use that has not yet been achieved. Its not just housing systems either, HR/Payroll, Asset Management & others all can suffer from this phenomenon.

The demonstrator moves confidently from CRM into housing management, repairs, scheduling, mobile working/field service, payments and reporting. Screens open, data appears and nobody has to type the same tenant reference into four different systems. It all looks sexy & marvellous, and the natural assumption is that several other landlords must already be running this exact combination successfully.

Sometimes they clearly are not.

One customer may use the CRM. Another may use the repairs module. Somebody else may have implemented the mobile application. There may even be a landlord trialing the scheduler. But the complete collection of products being demonstrated may never have operated together in a live housing environment.

That is a rather different proposition. A landlord can believe it is buying a proven integrated platform, only to discover halfway through implementation that it is actually the first organisation attempting to deploy that exact mixture of products, interfaces, data flows and business processes. At that point, the word “customer” quietly becomes “pioneer”. We have all seen them in the Hollywood cowboy films, generally the ones with the arrows in their backs!

Suppliers generally prefer more uplifting terminology. Strategic partner. Early adopter. Design partner. Lighthouse customer. All lovely phrases. They can also mean you are helping them finish the product (or maybe start it!).

Being first is not automatically a disaster. It can bring greater influence over the roadmap, more attention from senior supplier staff and an opportunity to shape how the solution develops. It can also bring considerably more testing, integration risk, consultancy days, workarounds and meetings involving sentences such as, “That might be available in the next sprint/release.”

You may also discover that things you reasonably regarded as defects are being logged as enhancement requests. Apparently, expecting two products sold as an integrated suite to exchange information correctly can sometimes be quite an ambitious customer requirement.

The key question during any demonstration is therefore not simply, “Can the system do this?” Most suppliers can make something appear to work for 12 minutes in a controlled demonstration using carefully prepared data.

The better question is, “Which live customer is using this exact combination, in this exact way, today?”

Not a customer using one of the modules. Not a customer planning to implement it next year. Not a customer who has signed a contract but has yet to go live. Not somebody who attended a webinar and said it looked promising.

A real, live customer using the same products, the same integrations and broadly the same processes, at a comparable scale. Then ask to speak to them.

If nobody can be named, the demonstration has not necessarily shown you a proven integrated solution. It may simply have shown you a rather attractive experiment.

….and you may be about to pioneer it all the way to the falls.

Are you lumbered with legacy solutions & unsure whats out there ?
Give me a call, I will drop in for a brew & bring the chocolate gingers

Swell Maps

If you do the X / Bluesky thing, follow me at @HousingITguy or LinkedIn here https://uk.linkedin.com/in/tonysmiththathousingitguy

I  don’t know if you have noticed this last six months, the shear volume of software solution buy up and acquisition activity in the public and socialhousing sector? Its reducing actual choice and I have heard it said it actually stifles innovation.

Its sure as hell easier for some outfits to buy up solutions, also bagging customers needing yet more numbers in their sales ledgers, than getting out being hungry and winning new business. What with MRI concluding its purchase of Capita’s public sector offerings after challenge, Aareon doing it with Designer Software’s Homemaster and MIS-AMS ActiveH, its as one colleague confided to me, “well its just down to a few players now for modern procurement”.

The trouble of course with buying up just anything, is suppliers can end up like having an overfilled golf bag. When that difficult opportunity comes it, its 3 times as hard to work out what club would be best to hit that ball with. In the last few months I have heard multiple pitches telling different stories about the same products in the inventory, with often the sales team confused. We are in a sector where good staff are leaving because they are approaching retirement, family life is changing for them, or just don’t want to be TUPE’d over (again) to a corporate monolith. A good merger also is a time to cut down that dead wood that you haven’t tackled in many years and fortunately your new owners will do the unpleasant pruning.

Unfortunately if acquisitions are not done well and managed well, your product offering becomes more like a soup, a thick and not too present one too. No wonder some of the new kids on the block are doing so well, such as the dinosaur slayer (you know who I mean), who is proud to just sell 3 things really well and tell you what the cost per property is. Simples !

Also, for balance, other alternatives on CRM based solutions are available with D365 & Salesforce. Other dinosaur slayers of a kind !

So, to be blogging about yet another acquisition, is unfortunate, although to be honest, a little less so.

This month another of those big public sector software suppliers picked up a GIS solution. NEC (nee NPS Northgate Public Services) ‘strategically’ acquired CadCorp. Full chapter and verse can be read here

I am familiar with Cadcorp, as back in 2011 at my old shop (MIS-AMS) we were resellers of its UK based product and even back then it had clever and flexible integrations and rich features. It’s a good product and I still hear good things about it.

In contrast to a few others this feels less like a desperate hoovering up of solutions and more like adding an essential part of a jigsaw into their offerings around Blue Light, safety, energy, infrastructure and others in addition to social housing, via API’s.

It would be hoped that the comments on the marriage ring true and this brings something bigger than the sum of its two parts, rather than what is often experienced elsewhere, merged help-desks and a tin-ear in reference to general customer service.

Aside from taking over Anite OHMS back in Nov 2008 (after the OFT decided not to refer it to the Competition Commission), NEC now have pretty much one of everything to pitch. Less of the multiples,  “which contractor, which mobile, or which housing solution this time”, type nonsense.

Paradoxically, having more traditional product to choose from with the same logo on the front, can often cause more problems than it solves. If mixing products, always check if they have been integrated in that manner before, successfully tried or not. I hear far too many occurrences of this, with often bigger landlords often being caught out worse. I am sure some contacts of mine may be reading this and thinking “yes”, its easier to be caught out than you think! So, readers, let the buyer beware.

Two many products? - how to scope your options ?

After Solvares buys More-IQ, then merges with Totalmobile. UK housing DLO & contractor repair systems just got a lot more interesting. Two announcements in four days and neither is small.

Following on from consolidating FLS (Fast Lean Smart) recently, Solvares Group has acquired UK-based More-IQ, a true Cloud dynamic scheduling specialist that has been aiming straight at social housing landlords. Good on Nick, Katie and Gael on that one. 😉

Then Solvares and Totalmobile announced yet another merger, creating a combined group of 800+ people supporting 4,000+ customers, with housing explicitly called out as a key sector. This matters because scheduling these days is not a nice-to-have. In housing repairs, it is the control room. If the scheduler is average, everything downstream looks average too: customer comms, compliance visits, voids sequencing, multi-trade, right-first-time, and the “why did nobody turn up?” calls.

What does this mean in simple terms, a view from a seasoned sector Critical Friend ?

Solvares is stitching together optimisation and scheduling brains with a mainstream field service execution platform. More-IQ strengthens the cloud-native scheduling side, and Solvares explicitly positions it in their comms as boosting its offering for the housing sector and accelerating cloud-native innovation.

The Totalmobile merger statement is basically “planning through to execution”, at scale, with no immediate change promised to existing customers. Well, they all say that don’t they?

These platforms are winning some significant housing deals and often banging on about those wins. How some of those pan out to satisfactory go-lives might be somewhat shankier. I mean I see some of these in my projects.

Community Housing recently has selected Totalmobile’s platform to support repairs for 6,000+ homes, with 70 operatives, aiming for March 2026 go-live and projecting £750k+ net savings over five years. Hyde Housing has a published repairs contract with Totalmobile extending field-service and scheduling capability across wider operations. Wandle Housing Association awarded Totalmobile Connect, Mobilise and Analytics via G-Cloud. Raven Housing Trust and Vivid Homes are great More-IQ examples.

So what should DLO repairs managers and housing organisations do next? Maybe don’t panic. But also not sleepwalk into a new foreign-owned group making quiet changes while you are busy fighting damp, mould and backlog. After all, there are some great alternative indie choices out there too, such as ROCC who quietly seem to be just getting on with doing a good job with everything ‘in the SAAS box’.

Here is what I would get nailed down now, in writing, (with dates OBVs) :

Roadmap certainty: what gets invested in, what gets merged, and what gets nudged toward end-of-life over the next 24 months. The press line is “no immediate changes”, but “immediate” is doing a lot of heavy lifting  there (like every merger or acquisition).

Commercial protection: what happens to pricing at renewal when products get “simplified” into bundles, or the additional contract clauses bubble up.

UK housing priority: ask how UK housing feature needs, support coverage, and escalation routes are protected when priorities get set outside the UK. Lets hope all decisions need not go via Heikendorf, DE in the future, that would not be clever for customers across the British Isles, RP's & AHB's.

Integration commitments: if your HMS, CRM, comms, compliance, BI Reporting, or contractor ecosystem hangs off scheduling, insist on a clear integration support plan. In a merger, interfaces are where surprises breed, particularly if some products could be depreciated, or swapped with other alternatives.

And what about OneAdvanced DRS, you know OptiTime as was? (Showing my age now)

This is the bit that should make OneAdvanced customers and prospects sit up straighter. OneAdvanced markets Dynamic Resource Scheduler as a core product for field workforce optimisation and it is also being sold on G-Cloud frameworks as Resource Scheduling (formerly DRS).

But the competitive pressure is more real than ever, because Solvares has just bought a supplier that is positioning itself as cloud-native dynamic scheduling software with a housing-first focus, and it is now (most likely) being paired with Totalmobile’s execution platform.

So the likely impact on DRS is not “DRS is dead” (not quite yet anyway). It is more like this: procurements get harder, buyers will ask more awkward questions about what “cloud” really means, and incumbents will be pushed to modernise faster because the Solvares-Totalmobile combo can pitch an end-to-end story with a cloud-native scheduling engine at its centre. Again, this is not an only option, look and think out of the box, you don’t always have to be with the big boys. Often small and perfectly formed is an advantage.

If you are a DRS landlord/user, you probably do not need to rip out and replace. But you should use this moment to extract roadmap clarity and commitments, because serious competition has just arrived with a variant of 100% true Cloud scheduling and (potentially) a much bigger chequebook behind it.

My Take is this could genuinely help providers, if it leads to better scheduling that matches the reality of housing, then actually executes cleanly in the field. However, consolidation is never a charity project. It is a control project. The winners will be the landlords who treat this like any other high-impact supplier change: tighten governance, pin down roadmap and commercials, and keep hold of their operational data and integrations so they stay in the driving seat. Hopefully the consolidated helpdesk will not give you too many sleepless nights.

Is your organisation struggling to justify a software change, or worried not everything has been covered?

More buyout and product renaming news this month. Yes, it's getting hard to keep up, after that recent Homemaster sellout !

Following the completion of the CMA’s competition enquiry into Capita’s public software arm being bought up by US Real Estate software behemoth MRI, news leaks out about where next for the original survivor.

Starting as IBS OpenHousing back in dinosaur days B.C. (Before Capita OBVs), it was originally known as OpenHousing. I remember the extremely persuasive golden touch of Davinder Sanghera, the velvet tongue of perma-tanned sales anchor Neil Green (like Brucie handling his dolly-dealers), virtually scooping up every procurement deal out there between 1999 & early 2000’s.

In 2008 IBS was acquired by Capita who already had the aging Academy HMS platform. From memory I think the initial play looked to migrate all the OpenHousing clients to Academy, although that soon appeared to be reversed as OH was regarded as the superior offering. I was involved in a few Academy-2-OpenHousing migrations in my time.

A dip in sales in the mid-2010’s and the Progress Database version becoming less popular than SQL Server prompted the start of a development of an underlying SQL database version. Before Covid lockdown, work was already in play on a browser presentation version, which had an improved feel than the functional but clunky Progress UI. Totalmobile forms and the Mendel scheduler (if DRS was not favoured..) was the mobile working offering.

Post C19 saw Capita coming back to competitive & framework procurements gaining traction and signing up older sites to migrate to the new product OneHousing, in the Cloud. Capita Software services being for sale for some time provided opportunities for many in the sector. I heard rumours that Plentific, Aareon, Totalmobile and others may be seeing OneHousing as a bargain proposition to enhance a wider portfolio or drag themselves into the socialhousing 2020’s.

MRI were always on my bingo card however, although adding a second ‘bigger housing system option’ into the mix, is sure to raise a few queries. Can two big solutions be merged into a single already crowded helpdesk? Will existing Orchard or OpenHousing sites see a push more towards a confederation of different products integrated together, or predominantly a single offering. The latter potentially feels easier for upgrades etc, particularly if that’s a SAAS offering. Also, will Totalmobile be replaced by a MRI in-house solution to concentrate IP. Indeed if its 100% of MRI’s IP, its all profit.

So what will this new MRI product be named? There's been mistakes before. Aareon was originally calling its QLX in a browser ‘NG’. This is a Hollywood expression, the opposite of OK. Still, that became Yuneo ‘Its about you’ and had its plug pulled a few years later, not even really seeing the time of day.

I’ve heard from my spies that it took many minutes of consideration and the new inviting name ‘MRI Housing One’ was born. I’ve always thought PR was a money for nothing game, just swap the words around.

Although what’s in a new name, does that mean the old Orchard solution is a number two? Well, we will just have to see how that one pans out (not pun intended!).
